Tax resolution

Tax investigations and tax disputes are among the most stressful experiences a person can suffer.  The idea that someone should pry into your personal affairs on behalf of government and that you should be in some way answerable to that person, can often lead you to be very angry.

In practice, a tax dispute or investigation is no different to any other dispute.  HMRC is duty bound to protect the Exchequer, and you are bound to protect yourself.  We are here to make that process less onerous, less personal, and to get the best outcome possible for you. Being truthful and open with HMRC is important, but sometimes, as they say, “it ain’t what you say, it’s the way that you say it”.  The wrong use of language and the presentation of arguments can make a big difference on both sides of an HMRC dispute.

Can I stop HMRC claiming under an APN?

Expert Tax Resolutions is our division that specialises in agreeing and negotiating in HMRC disputes.  We also use our range of connected experts including strong relationships with other specialists, for example in dealing with an Accelerated Payment Notice, and excellent tax barristers, to ensure that your position is protected to the maximum.

The interest by HMRC in overseas bank accounts (it is not a crime to hold money overseas, despite what the papers may imply) has resulted in their carrying out many inappropriate and unfounded investigations, and we have a wealth of experience in nipping such things in the bud.

You do not need to be a client of Hillier Hopkins to benefit from this service, and we commonly take referrals from other firms.  This can be advantageous to you if you feel your current adviser is excellent at planning and advice but less expert on resolving HMRC disputes.
